Q: How does micro modal compare to lyocell?

Both are cellulosic fibres made from wood pulp, but modal is produced by a modified viscose process and lyocell by a closed-loop solvent process. Modal is the softer of the two with more drape; lyocell is stronger, more absorbent and cooler to the touch. If you want maximum softness, choose modal; if you want maximum moisture management, choose lyocell.

About micro modal

What is micro modal?
Micro modal is modal fibre spun to a finer denier. Modal itself is a cellulosic fibre regenerated from beech tree pulp; spinning it finer produces a lighter, denser fabric with more drape and a silkier surface. It is roughly 50% more absorbent than cotton and noticeably softer, which is why it has become the default fabric for premium men's underwear.

What is micro modal made from?
Beech tree pulp. The wood is broken down into cellulose, which is then regenerated and spun into fibre. Because beech is a fast-growing hardwood that needs no irrigation, modal production uses considerably less water than conventional cotton — commonly cited as around 10 to 20 times less per kilogram of fibre.

Is micro modal better than cotton?
For underwear, in most respects yes. Micro modal is softer, more breathable, more absorbent and better at holding its shape and colour through repeated washing. Cotton is cheaper and fully natural, and some people prefer its drier hand-feel. The clearest difference shows up over time: cotton bobbles, fades and bags out, where modal does not.

Comfort and care

Is micro modal good for sensitive skin?
It is one of the better choices. The fibre surface is smoother than cotton, producing less friction at the waistband and leg openings, and it is highly breathable so heat and moisture do not build up against the skin. Combined with flatlock seams it removes most of the common causes of irritation.

Does micro modal underwear shrink?
Much less than cotton. Modal is more dimensionally stable, but it is still cellulose and will shrink under high heat. Wash at 30°C on a gentle cycle and line dry or tumble low. Avoid fabric softener, which coats the fibre and reduces its moisture-wicking.
