WE TAKE A LOOK AT THE HISTORY OF HUGO BOSS

Hugo Boss may be one of our newest brands at BANG&STRIKE, but it has a long and rich history. The brand was founded in 1924 by Hugo Ferdinand Boss. The youngest of five children, he did an apprenticeship as a merchant and completed military service from 1903 to 1905 and also worked in a weaving mill. He then took over as the heir to his parents’ lingerie shop in 1908. In 1914, he enlisted in the army and served the World War One with the rank of corporal.

He founded his own clothing company in Metzingen in 1923 and then a factory in 1924 (initially with two partners). The company produced shirts and jackets and then work clothing, sportswear and raincoats. In the 1930s it produced uniforms for various parties around the time of the World War. By 1960 the company was producing off-the-peg suits and in 1970, the first Boss branded suits were produced, with the brand becoming a registered trademark in 1977. This was followed by the start of the company’s long association with motorsport, sponsoring Formula 1 driver Niki Lauda, and later the McLaren Racing team. More recently, they’ve collaborated with F1 drivers Lewis Hamilton, Nico Rosberg and David Coulthard to produce campaign videos for Hugo Boss.

With a love of sport, Boss also partnered up with British Skipper Alex Thomson since 2003, making their partnership one of the longest and most coveted sailing and sports sponsorship in history. Of partnering with sports stars Boss quotes ‘Hugo Boss focuses on four sports- sailing, Formula 1, soccer and golf. Sailing offers Hugo Boss a platform for demonstrating its fashion competence both on land and at sea.’ They provide Thomson and his team high performance sportswear as well as outfits for special occasions and events.

The company also created the Hugo Boss Prize, which is awarded every other year to an artist (or group of artists) working in any medium, anywhere in the world. Since its establishment in 1996, it has distinguished itself from other art awards because it has no restrictions on nationality or age. The prize is administered by the Guggenheim Museum and sponsored by the Hugo Boss clothing company, which since 1995 has been sponsoring various exhibitions and activities at the museum.

The brand itself has many celebrity fans, from Gerard Butler to Ryan Reynolds, Eddie Redmayne to Liam Hemsworth and more. More notably are the celebrities’ love for the Hugo Boss suit, which is synonymously for style and wealth. Recent recruits to the Hugo Boss family include Theo James. The star is a well known actor after playing a minor role in The Inbetweeners, and landing one of the main characters in teen action movie, Divergent.

Hugo Boss not only create clothing, but mens underwear and mens swimwear too (both of which we stock of course!) and their body wear campaign was hugely successful. It is both comfortable and classic. The range features exceptionally comfortable underwear with a splash of contemporary elegance. Don’t compromise quality for style, coming in skin-friendly materials, first-class workmanship and perfect fits.

Hugo Boss have recently aired their new collections via Fashion Week and current ‘It’ girl Kylie Jenner was seen sporting the German brand (aside from when she’s sporting Brother In Law Kanye West’s range of course!). The brand is sold worldwide and while there have been rumours of profit margins not being met, it’s no denying that Hugo Boss have a long history behind them and we’re sure a long history ahead of them.
