Our Favourite Terry Richardson Shoots

Terrence “Terry” Richardson is an American fashion and portrait photographer who has shot advertising campaigns for Marc Jacobs, Aldo, Supreme, Sisley, Tom Ford, and Yves Saint Laurent among others. He has also done work for magazines such as Rolling Stone, GQ, Vogue, Vanity Fair, Harper’s Bazaar, i-D, and Vice. Richardson has been accused several times of using his influence to coerce models to engage in undesired sexual behaviors and poses during fashion shoots, including engaging in sexual acts with Richardson himself. This however has been rebuffed by many trusted industry insiders, models and photographers. There are several repeating themes in Richardson’s work, notably that of putting high-profile celebrities in mundane situations and photographing them using traditionally pedestrian methods, such as the use of an instant camera. He is also known for posing with his subjects, often giving them his trademark glasses so they may “pretend to be him”. He’s worked with may celebs and models, and we round up some of our favourite collaborations.

Our Favourite Terry Richardson Shoots

#1. David Gandy.

In 2011, Richardson shot male supermodel David Gandy for a Sergio K campaign. The campaign itself featured Gandy in provocative, almost ‘real-life’ situations, which ultimately had an air of voyeurism to the shots. It was something that took Gandy from being a suited and booted model and allowed him to play with his bad boy persona a little more.

The campaign’s background was The Jane Hotel in New York. Filled with history, this ultra-trendy West Village hotel has a worn, historic look spruced up with bohemian-chic décor: stuffed animal heads, glitter balls, potted palms and plush sofas. It was relatively indulgent for Richardson who generally doesn’t use intricate or fussy backgrounds. We can imagine it tested his boundaries, and we think it worked rather well, don’t you?

#2. Diego Miguel.

A signature shoot for Richardson- white background and fun poses. It’s not the only time he’s worked with Brazilian model Diego Miguel, having shot him for Glamour Brazil, so it must’ve been a successful match. Richardson focused in on Miguels muscles, as well as some of his inked body.

Finally moving onto another signature as mentioned, the inclusion of Richardson himself in an image with Diego. This breaks the boundaries between photographer and muse, and whether it’s a self indulgent tactic on Richardson’s behalf or not, we think it’s a great way to add a little personality into his portraits!

#3. Sean O’Pry.

Terry Richardson shot Sean O’Pry for another of Sergio K’s campaign for Spring 2013. Once again moving towards a more scenic background, these black and white images are a little more edgy and inadvertently sexy without even trying. O’Pry brings a little more boisterous fun into the shots, it’s like a super cool house party that we’re not invited to, just allowed to watch from afar, which we think is pretty cool.

Once again, a prestigious hotel was chosen for the location. This time it was the Waldorf Astoria, again in New York. From its inception, the Waldorf Astoria gained international renown for its lavish dinner parties and galas, often at the centre of political and business conferences and fundraising schemes involving the rich and famous. People like Marilyn Monroe and Marlene Dietrich frequently dined and partied at the Waldorf and to this day it’s a location for people who are interested in the Hollywood greats to visit, making it an ideal location for an icon like Richardson to shoot in.

#4. Marlon Teixeira.

Once again, Terry takes his talents elsewhere and shot Marlon Teixeira on Iapnema beach in 2011. The images are overtly sexual, and Teixeira is literally writhing around in the sand. Ipanema Beach is where the party goers head to in the Summer in Brazil, so it’s no wonder that fun loving Terry wanted to shoot the model on that very beach.

It’s not the first time Terry visited Brazil. Diesel invited Terry to Rio for a week to reveal the soul of the cosmic city of the future,  available in Terry’s book, Rio Cidade Maravilhosa. He photographed the surf, celebrities, hustlers, civilian regulars, a phalanx of prisoners in Diesel jeans, the city, the landscape, and the artificial beach, Piscinão de Ramos, contrived for those who can’t afford Copacabana Palace and Ipanema, just to the north. So perhaps he was inspired a few years later to visit the real Ipanema, and Marlon Teixeira was more than willing to be the subject of the shoot?
