Baywatch 2017- Past & Present Baywatch Boys

Baywatch was one of the most popular TV shows throughout the 90s and even if you didn’t watch it, you’ll definitely recognise that infamous red swimwear and that catchy theme tune! The likes of David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson starred in the show that revolved around the work of a team of lifeguards. Storylines included earthquakes, shark attacks and even serial killers were aired. All with a healthy dose of Californian lifestyle thrown in for good measure of course.

Although the show became super popular, it was actually cancelled after the first season for various reasons, but one of its most famous cast members had faith in the show. David Hasselhoff, the most famous of the actors and actresses due to the hit TV series Knight Rider, enlisted some help from the creators and executive producers Michael Berk, Douglas Schwartz and Gregory J. Bonann and revived it for the first-run syndication market in 1991. Hasselhoff was given the title of executive producer for his work on bringing the show back.

The show went on for an entire decade, until it moved to Hawaii for two years. From this there was a series of spin offs,  including Baywatch Nights, and three direct to video films: Baywatch the Movie: Forbidden ParadiseBaywatch: White Thunder at Glacier Bay; and Baywatch: Hawaiian Wedding. And this month, there’s a Baywatch reboot in the form of a Hollywood movie with some pretty big actors.

In the film, Mitch Buchannon, the leader of the elite Baywatch lifeguard squad, clashes with newest recruit Matt Brody, a washed-up pro athlete. However, when a dead body is recovered from the ocean, the two must put aside their personal differences and work with their team to stop a criminal mastermind’s drug trafficking operation. Sounds intense. So let’s take a look at who will be playing the new Baywatch characters and how they match up.

David Hasselhoff and Dwayne Johnson as Mitch Buchannon.

Mitch Buchannon is the main character in both Baywatches. David Hasselhoff played the role in the show for 11 years. Watched by almost 1 billion viewers across 140 countries, it solidified his status among the world’s foremost television personalities of the said period. This success combined with his royalties and his other ventures have placed Hasselhoff’s fortune at more than $100 million and in 1996, Hasselhoff was given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The Hoff, as he is most famously known, dipped his toe into comedy over the past decade, and even released his own song, with a tongue in cheek video that recognises one of his most iconic roles in Knight Rider.

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is an American actor, producer, singer, and professional wrestler and will be taking over as the leader of the Baywatchers. Johnson gained mainstream fame in the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE) from 1996 to 2004 as a major figure in the company’s Attitude Era, and was the first third-generation wrestler in the company’s history. Johnson’s motion picture debut was a brief appearance as The Scorpion King in the opening sequence of The Mummy Returns. The movie’s financial success led to his first leading role, in the spin-off The Scorpion King. He was listed in the 2007 Guinness World Records as the highest-paid actor in his first starring role, receiving US$5.5 million for this movie. The Mummy Returns, featuring The Rock, shattered a two-year record by earning $28,594,667, making it the highest-grossing single day for any film in history. From there Johnson has had a lucrative career in film, and is most notably famous for his appearance in the Fast & The Furious franchise among others.

Zac Efron and David Charvet as Matt Brody.

From 2002-2006 Zac Efron he appeared in minor roles in TV shows like ER and Firefly, and his breakthrough role of course was the lead in High School Musical. From there, the fever hit the masses. Zac couldn’t go anywhere without his life scrutinised and followed by fans and the media worldwide. From High School Musical, Zac’s next big project was taking on the role of Link Larkin in Hairspray. He maintains that all vocals in that film were most definitely him despite critics questioning! From 2014 onwards, he is famed for his comedy roles in the likes of Neighbors with Seth Rogan, Dirty Grandpa with Robert DeNiro and Mike & Dave Need Wedding Dates with Anna Kendrick. Not bad for someone who isn’t even 30! He’s taking on the role of Matt Brody, a drop out athlete who becomes a lifeguard to redeem his reputation.

Matt Brody however was originally played by David Charvet and he arrived on the beach in 1992. His character storylines in the original Baywatch include being involved in a long-term relationship with Summer Quinn in the fourth season, and pursuing a similar relationship with C.J. Parker in the fifth and sixth seasons. In the series, Brody was forced to resign because of a phony sexual harassment lawsuit filed by series ‘bad girl,’ Neely Capshaw, but was reinstated after the lawsuit proved to be false. After a while, Matt went back to France unable to cope with Neely’s return and while he eventually returned, after going on a holiday with some members of the team, he was never seen again, which suggests he returned to France again. David Charvet left the world of acting in 1999 to pursue a career in music, and his debut single “Should I Leave”, a bilingual hit in French and English, hit #3 in France and also charted in Belgium and Sweden. His bilingual hit “Jusqu’au bout”/”Leap of Faith” reached #6 in France, followed by the bilingual “Apprendre à aimer”/”Teach Me How to Love” that made it to the French Top 20 and was a hit in Belgium, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. Charvet sold over 2.5 million albums. He toured extensively throughout Europe and Asia, performing for packed arenas, writing music in the process.
