If you haven’t heard of Moonlight, then you must have been living under a rock. It’s one of the most critically acclaimed films of the past couple of years, and is the cause of much appreciation throughout the film industry. Based on a semi-autobiographical play by Tarrel Alvin McCraney and directed by Barry Jenkins, the story is told from the life of the main character. It explores the difficulties he faces with his own sexuality and identity and the abuse he receives because of it both physically and emotionally.
It was the first film with an all-black cast, the first LGBT film and has won a string of awards, including at the Golden Globes, and the Academy Awards! It was included in many top ten lists throughout 2016, from Buzzfeed’s to Vanity Fair’s and more. It actually caused more of a stir at the Academy Awards than anticipated, due to the fact that La La Land was mistakenly announced as the winner of Best Picture, when it actual fact, it was Moonlight that was supposed to scoop the covetable accolade, which they did eventually.
The cast of Moonlight includes Trevante Rhodes, André Holland, Janelle Monáe, Ashton Sanders, Naomie Harris, Alex Hibbert and Mahershala Ali. Not only have the cast been praised by their industry and their peers, but other industries have stood up to take note. None more so than the fashion industry. Some of the cast have recently been photographed for a Calvin Klein campaign entitled “Revelation”. Rhodes, Ali, Sanders and Hibbert have all been shot by Willy Vanderperre under the orders of Creative Director Raf Simons.
It’s his second campaign, with the first featuring young starlet Millie Bobby of Stranger Things. It seems that Raf is trying to merge the stars of the golden screen with the high fashion, and has cited that the ads were created to celebrare “revelatory performances in the film of the year.”
In the Moonlight campaign, Mahershala Ali speaks “Even after the performance is over, I realise that you still have to service it. I’ll be in a coffee shop and someone will come up to me and just open a vein…telling me how this struck a nerve for them, what their experience was. And I really try to be present for that. I’m really thankful for that.”
It’s also not the first time the cast have worked with Simons, as many of them have been wearing his designs around the awards season and to various ceremonies. Sanders, however has been a fan for years and was overjoyed working with the designer who he says he’s been a fan of for years.
So what do you think about the Calvin Klein Moonlight actor campaign?
